We are working with fisheries in the region to improve their sustainability and support sustainable seafood choices for consumers to recover keystone species and prevent overfishing.
The growing global demand for seafood products has doubled in the last 30 years, with the overexploitation of marine resources leading to the collapse of fish stocks. Recently, however, there has been increasing demand for sustainable seafood.
Sardine and anchovy are identified as key low trophic species in the Adriatic Sea.
Sustainable management of these resources is of the utmost importance as they are under severe pressure from many human activities, predominantly industrial fishing.
With a wide range of stakeholders we are working to improve sardine and anchovy fisheries in the Adriatic to make them sustainable, environmentally friendly and competitive in the marketplace. We are driving the largest Croatian fisheries towards sustainable practices and thus becoming a major role model for fishery management in the region.
Our main goal is to lead the improvement of small pelagic fishing practices in the Adriatic and help meet the criteria of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, recognized as the main standard of sustainability.
We can all act to safeguard our precious marine resources. Help us defend our seafood supplies for future generations.
