All over the world we are working to protect the world’s most iconic species, including tigers, rhinos, polar bears, and elephants, and ensure that they are recovering in the wild. Adria is home to amazing wildlife. We want to stabilize and recover the key species of our region, conserve the fragile karst ecosystem and improve the relationship between people and our large carnivores: wolf, lynx and bear.
We share our planet with millions of species of plants and animals, a variety of wildlife that enriches our lives in so many ways. Nature is a source of inspiration and essential for all goods and services that make our lives possible: air, water, food, fibers, building materials, medicine, energy, fertile soil, recreational values.
Wildlife is crucial to nature’s delicate web of life, and yet is dangerously threatened by human impacts on the environment. These include habitat loss, overexploitation and illegal trade, both local and international. We’ve seen an astonishing 60% decline in the size of populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians in just over 40 years, according to WWF's Living Planet Report 2018. We need to reverse this loss of nature and create a future where wildlife thrives again.
Adria is a biodiversity hotspot, with 7,000-8,000 marine species, more than 50% of all birds in Europe and over 400 new species of invertebrates discovered within Dinaric karst in the last decade alone. We are committed to safeguarding priority species, such as our large carnivores (brown bear, wolf and lynx), marine mammals, sharks and rays, corals, birds of prey, the sturgeon and the olm.
Protecting wildlife is at the heart of our work. We focus on protecting populations of some of the world’s most important species. For nearly 60 years we have made it our mission to find solutions that save the marvelous array of life on our planet by applying the best science available and working closely with local communities.
In Adria, together with our partners, we are building awareness on the necessity for the coexistence of people with wildlife, maintaining a precious balance. Another major threat to that balance is wildlife crime and we are doing our best to stop it.
By 2030, we want to see 30% of the world’s surface managed in a way that takes account of wildlife through protected areas like national parks or community-run conservation areas. We’re working with government agencies, scientists and local people to increase the area of well-managed protected areas.
